Letter from a Client

I am so grateful for SPAN and their Lawyers For Victims Program (LFVP). SPAN advocates were available to support and assist me throughout the entire process of getting protection to stay safe from my abuser. I received help filing paperwork for a Civil Protection Order and navigating the court system, as well as emotional support in the courtroom as I plead my case for a temporary protection order. Through the LFVP, SPAN also provided a lawyer to represent me in the permanent protection order hearing, which was greatly needed to ensure success in obtaining the order. Further, an advocate sat with me and my mother while at the hearing, which gave me more strength and courage. I felt great relief knowing that I was not alone throughout this very difficult process. The assistance I received truly helped me in getting my life back and regaining personal power over my physical and emotional safety — and the safety of my family. Additionally, I was given resources for other types of support and assistance, such as counseling, shelter and community referrals. My background is in sociology and educational psychology. I never dreamed I would end up in an abusive relationship, causing me to lose my job and forcing me to move to another state. I cannot overstate my gratitude for programs like this being available to help people in need. In the future, I would love to give back and volunteer in any way possible, knowing what a difference SPAN and LFVP has made in my life’s circumstances.
